The Institute's purpose is to be a research and educational institution
that focuses on the disease of malaria. It will fulfill this purpose
through the following efforts.
-
Foster and encourage research on malaria.
Among the ways it will do this is to identify those who have abilities
and interest to conduct such research, with priority given to those
from countries where malaria is endemic. This may take the form
of identifying individuals in developing countries and encouraging
their further education and training in areas that will establish
them as effective researchers in malaria.
-
Support research and educational activities
that will lead to a better understanding of malaria. Activities
that will lead to more effective prevention and appropriate treatment
of malarial infections and their complications will be preferentially
supported. The Institute will do this by collaborating with other
institutions already working in this field and also, where possible,
by seeking out and channeling resources, including financial and
material, to enable such activities.
-
Undertake research and educational programs
related to malaria infection in humans. The Institute intends
to both establish its own facilities as well as work with already
existing facilities, in both the United States and developing countries.
The facilities will be used to develop and pursue active programs
that will allow both scientific investigations as well as train
and educate individuals at the undergraduate and postgraduate level
in the field of malaria. It is envisioned that laboratory, administrative,
educational and treatment facilities may eventually be developed
as resources are obtained for such activities.
